COIMBATORE: The special court for the trial of bomb blast cases in the city on Friday sentenced a 40-year-old man to life imprisonment for murdering his brother-in-law in Valparai last year. Judge D Balu awarded the life imprisonment to Kanagarathinam,40, of Kamarajar Nagar in Valparai.

Kanagarathinam, a construction worker, was residing with his wife Anusuay, 35, and two children at Kamarajar Nagar. Anusuya’s two brothers - Palaniraja, 33, and Jothiraja - were also residing with them in the same house. They were daily wage labourers.

Kanagarathinam, a tippler, often fought with his wife and remained jobless for a long time. Palaniraja used to intervene during their fight. During a fight between the couple on January 27, 2021, Palaniraja questioned Kanagarathinam for coming home drunk and then went to his bed.

Meanwhile, Kanagarathinam took a kitchen knife and stabbed Palaniraja before escaping from the house. Palaniraja was rushed to the government hospital in Valparai where he died without responding to the treatment. Special public prosecutor K Karthikeyan appeared on behalf of the victim.

The case trial was held before the special court, which sentenced Kanagarathinam to life imprisonment and slapped a fine of Rs 1,000.
