Coimbatore: The body of a 27-year-old man was found in a roadside drainage channel near the Syrian Church on Brooke Bond Road in the city on Monday.
The deceased was identified as B Abuthagir Bhasha, of TK Street near RS Puram in the city. He was working as a driver and also involved in finance business.
His wife, Fathima, 45, had lodged a missing person complaint on Sunday. In her complaint, she stated that Abuthagir left home around 5pm on Friday and did not return. The family searched for him on Saturday but could not find him. His mobile phone was switched off when they tried to contact him.
RS Puram police registered a missing person case and began an investigation. Meanwhile, police received information about a man's body in a drain near the Syrian Church. When police reached the spot, they found the body in a half-burnt state with cut injuries to the abdomen.
They later identified the body as that of Abuthagir. His family also confirmed his identity.
Police have altered the case to murder and intensified investigation to trace the killers.
