Man arrested for murdering wife
Coimbatore: A day after a 29-year-old man murdered his wife by strangulating her in a case of drunken brawl at Tholampalayamputhur near Karamadai, the rural police arrested the accused on Friday night.
The arrested was identified as R Azaruddin, 29, of Odanthurai village near Mettupalayam. He murdered his wife A Mariammal, 35, of Pilichigoundanpudur near Kanuvaipalayam at Karamadai on Thursday night.
According to an investigation officer, Mariammal married Azaruddin after her first husband Chinnaraj passed away a few years ago. “She has two sons - Siva, 5, and Manikandan, 7 - in the first marriage.”
The officer said Mariammal started to work in a brickkiln unit at Kanuvaipalayam after the demise of her first husband. “There she met Azaruddin and the duo developed an affair. They got married a year ago.”
The preliminary investigation revealed that Mariammal was an alcoholic and used to spent her most of her earnings on liquor. On Thursday evening, Mariammal, Azaruddin and her brother's wife R Banu Priya, 25, went to a Tasmac shop at Pilichidoundenpudur and consumed alcohol. While returning home by walk, Mariammal and Azaruddin picked up a quarrel when they reached Boyar Pallam at Tholampalayamputhur. Banu Priya, however, left the spot.
Azaruddin later called up his mother-in-law Selvi, 55, and told her that Mariammal had fallen on road in an inebriated condition. Selvi dialled 108 ambulance service and Mariammal was taken to the government hospital in Mettupalayam, where doctors declared her brought dead. Police said the body was found with injuries on neck.
The Karamadai police on Friday picked up Azaruddin for questioning and he confessed to the crime. Police subsequently registered a case under Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code and arrested him on Friday night. “He will be produced before a judicial magistrate court on Saturday,” the investigation officer said.
