Licences of 13,627 traffic violators in district to be cancelled temporarily
COIMBATORE: The rural police have referred 13,627 driving licences to regional transport officers (RTOs) in the district for temporary
Police had booked 63,975 cases for not wearing helmets and 7,490 cases for not wearing seat belts as part of measures to reduce fatal accidents since January, police superintendent R Pandiarajan said.
Data available with the rural police shows that 472 fatal accidents were reported between January and December this year, killing 511 people. Last year, during the same period, 681 fatal accidents were reported, which claimed 699 lives.

As many as 1,478 non-fatal accidents were reported during the period this year, injuring 2,233 people. Last year, 1,560 non-fatal accidents were reported and 2,241 people suffered injuries during the same period.
“We booked 3,944 cases for over speeding, 3,419 for red light jumping, 5,114 cases for using mobile phone while driving, 1,345 cases for drunken driving, 1,720 cases for carrying overload in goods carriage and 2,078 cases for carrying people in goods carriage,” said Pandiarajan.
While government buses were involved 24 fatal cases, private buses caused 21 fatal accidents this year. Trucks were involved in 49 fatal accidents, cars in 99 and two wheelers in 216 fatal accidents.
The RTOs had cancelled as many as 11,572 licences temporarily since January.
