, was spotted enjoying a bath on Monday. Hundreds of villagers thronged the area to get a peek at the animals taking a bath.

"The herd visits this lake every year to spend many hours in the water," said K Lagumaiya, a villager. This year, he said the herd seems larger than the one that visited last year.

According to forest officials, the elephants returned to Tamil Nadu forests from the forests of Karnataka near Denkanikottai in Krishnagiri district via Saanamavu and Iyur forest.

"During this time of year, fodder is sparse in Karnataka forests and thus elephants migrate to the forests in Tamil Nadu," said a forest official.

Villagers have asked the forest officials to drive the herd back into the forest. The forest department has warned the locals against disturbing the animals. They assured them that the herd would be driven back to the forest at the earliest.
