COIMBATORE: The city corporation has begun renovation work on the senior citizen's park near VOC grounds in Coimbatore. Estimated to cost of 25l akh, the park will get an acupuncture area, bore well water supply, better lighting, huts and sheds, dust bins and wash rooms.

City mayor, P Rajkumar, city corporation commissioner, K Vijaya Karthikeyan and other officials inspected the renovation work on Tuesday. "The park is exclusively for senior citizens of the district. So the facilities will adhere to their needs. We will set up several lawns with flowering plants, fountains and medicinal plants. A separate area for acupuncture with stones and other materials will be set up," said Sashirekha Selvaraj, Ward 72 councillor.

Initially, the civic body planned to include TNAU in the project and the horticulture department was asked to prepare a detailed project report to improve the park area. "But due to lack of funds, we are not implementing the state of the art facilities. But we will work towards improving the basic amenities," said a corporation officer.

Water supply was a major challenge which has been sorted out. "We have sanctioned a bore well connection near the park area. We will also improve the toilets and other wash areas inside the park," said the official. The work will be completed within a month, he added.
