Boat rides disrupt birds at Ukkadam lake
COIMBATORE: Bird enthusiasts have raised concerns that unrestricted boat rides at Ukkadam Periyakulam are disturbing both resident and migratory water birds. They are urging the Corporation to impose restrictions on boat movements to protect the birds.
Entartica Sea World, a private company, operates various boats on the lake, including speedboats, pontoon boats, jet skis, kayaks, and aqua cycles.
“There are islands within Periyakulam that were created for birds to roost and nest, but boat rides often take place near these islands. As a result, birds are no longer frequenting the area,” said PR Selvaraj, president of the Coimbatore Nature Society (CNS).
"Migratory birds typically arrive from places like Russia, Siberia, China, Mongolia, Japan, Europe, and the Himalayas from September to October and stay until April. Resident birds, such as pelicans, spot-billed ducks, and cormorants, are usually present year-round. However, unrestricted boat rides are scaring away both resident and migratory water birds. There should be some boundaries set for boat rides," he said.
"So far, 186 species of migratory and resident birds have been recorded at Ukkadam Lake, making it one of the richest lakes in terms of species diversity. While boat houses at Ukkadam and Valankulam attract the public for recreation, they do not benefit the birds. Instead, they cause significant disturbances. The civic body should prioritize bird conservation," he added.
When contacted, an official with Coimbatore Corporation said that boat movement would be restricted to specific areas of the lake, particularly avoiding the islands. "We will issue instructions to limit boat activity in sensitive zones," the official said.
