“As part of the Kaliamman temple festival, the temple car was taken on procession on Monday,” P Mathesh, one of the villagers, said. Police were also informed about the procession and government officials had disconnected live wires to avoid any electrocutions. Similarly, adequate police personnel were deployed all along the car procession. “While the procession was on, one of the wheel axles suddenly gave away. The temple car overturned and fell on the devotees,” Mathesh added.

More than 15 devotees sustained injuries. Victims with minor injuries were taken to the government hospital at Pappireddipatti while six people who sustained head injuries were rushed to the Dharmapuri government medical college and hospital for treatment. Manoharan and Saravanan succumbed to the injuries on the way,” an officer from the Pappireddipatti police station said. Another victim, Mahendran, 48, is battling for his life.Meanwhile, chief minister MK Stalin announced a solatium of ₹5 lakh each to the families of the deceased and ₹50,000 each to the injured.tnn
