CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu added 21 new cases of Covid-19 taking the tally of active cases in the state to 123 on Saturday - nearly double from the 63 cases recorded on December 16. Over the last week, 2,309 samples were drawn from people across the state, and the weekly test positivity rate - the number of people who tested positive over a total number of people tested - is hovering around 5%. There were no deaths reported due to Covid, officials said.

Health department officials say it may be too early for them to call this a new Covid-19 wave. "We are closely monitoring the situation. Doctors have been asked to test all patients admitted to hospitals with severe acute respiratory infection . We do not recommend testing for everyone with symptoms of flu. However, we strongly advise people who are ill to isolate themselves. We also recommend the elderly and people with comorbid conditions wear masks when they are in closed crowded spaces. Hand hygiene and social distancing rules are recommended for all," said director of public health Dr T S Selvavinayagam.

Hospitals have reported a spike in fever cases particularly H1N1, H3N2, and respiratory disorders caused by viruses. Most people are advised to rest and be in isolation.

On Saturday, of the 123 active cases, 57 of them were from the city. Adjacent districts- Chengalpet, Kancheepuram, and Tiruvallur had 9, 2 and 6 cases respectively. While Thiruvarur had 12 active cases, Coimbatore reported 10.

Of the 123 people tested positive in the last week, 48 of them have been discharged from the state registry.
