Stalin opens upgraded emergency control centre in Chennai

CHENNAI: Chief minister M K Stalin on Thursday inaugurated an upgraded state emergency control centre at Chepauk in Chennai. The control centre was upgraded at Rs 5.12 crore.

The govt has set up multi-hazard early warning technical cells, an inter-departmental coordination centre and other arrangements in an area of 10,000 square feet.

The centre has facilities such as a control room equipped with videoconferencing to issue advisories to the district collectors and a 70 seated conference hall to hold meetings by the ministers and officials on the preparedness, rescue and relief operations.

There is also a call centre to attend calls received via toll-free helplines -- 1070 and 112 -- during disasters.

“Since the centre is provided with uninterrupted power supply, telecommunication and internet services, it can be operated 24 hours a day without any interruption in times of calamity,” said an official release.

Ministers E V Velu, M R K Panneerselvam, K K S S R Ramachandran, chief secretary N Muruganandam and others were present.
