CHENNAI: Six people of a family, including two children, were killed on the spot when their autorickshaw collided head on with a State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) bus at Mamallapuram around 3pm on Thursday.

Police said the collision took place near Manamai Kadampadi village on East Coast Road when auto driver R Govindan, 50, of Adambakkam, was returning home with his mother, Kamatchi, 70, his wife, Amulu, 48, his eldest daughter, Sukanya, 28, his grand-daughter, M Kanishka, 6, and a relative's daughter, Haripriya, 8. None of them survived.

A few bus passengers suffered minor injuries.

Gopal, the driver of the bus going to Puducherry from Koyambedu with 28 passengers, has been arrested.

Govindan, his wife and mother had gone to visit his daughter Sukanya at Kadapakkam in the morning.

When they were leaving, Sukanya, her daughter Kanishka and a relative's daughter Haripriya decided to accompany them to Adambakkam.

The Mamallapuram police recovered the bodies stuck inside the autorickshaw. They were sent to Chengalpet Government Hospital for post-mortem. A case has been registered and an investigation is on.
