Chennai Port–Maduravoyal Corridor Progress

Construction of the 20.9 km elevated corridor is moving at full speed, forming a key infrastructure link between Chennai Port and Maduravoyal, aimed at improving freight and city traffic movement efficiency.

2/7

Rs 3,500 Crore Double-Tier Design Upgrade

The project has been upgraded into a double-tier structure with major design changes, significantly increasing capacity and allowing separation of heavy freight traffic from local urban vehicular movement.

3/7

Upper Tier Dedicated to Freight Movement

The upper level is designed exclusively for container trucks and port-bound freight vehicles, ensuring uninterrupted cargo flow directly between industrial zones and Chennai Port without city traffic disruption.

4/7

Lower Tier for City Traffic with 13 Ramps

The lower tier supports urban traffic with 13 entry and exit ramps at key locations, improving connectivity across Chennai and easing congestion along major city routes near the Cooum river corridor.

5/7

Strategic Connectivity Across Key Urban Points

Ramps are planned at major junctions including Sivananda Salai, College Road, Spur Tank Road, and Koyambedu, ensuring smoother movement and reduced travel time across high-density traffic corridors in Chennai. (PHOTO CREDIT: PIB Chennai)

6/7

Advanced Engineering with Cable-Stayed Bridges

The project incorporates modern cable-stayed bridges at important junctions such as Napier Bridge, enhancing structural strength, durability, and ensuring seamless connectivity across challenging urban and waterway crossings. (PHOTO CREDIT: PIB Chennai)

Major Boost to Chennai Port Capacity

Once completed, the corridor is expected to significantly improve logistics efficiency and increase Chennai Port’s cargo handling capacity from 53 MTPA to nearly 200 MTPA by 2047, strengthening trade connectivity.
