CHENNAI: A retired sub-inspector, who sustained head injuries after being pushed by a drunk cab driver at Selaiyur on Friday, died in hospital on Sunday.

The driver, Sivaraman, 29, from Appupattu village in Tiruvannamalai district has been charged with murder.

The victim was identified as Krishnamoorthy, 69. He lived with his wife, Jayasandileeswari, 60, at Rajayyar Street in Selaiyur. On Friday night, around 9pm, Krishnamoorthy's neighbours informed him about a man lying unconscious outside his house.

Krishnamoorthy found Sivaraman lying in the middle of the road. To avoid accidents, he brought water from his house and poured it on him. Sivaraman woke up and picked up an argument with Krishnamoorthy and pushed him to the ground. The retired policeman sustained head injuries.

Krishnamoorthy's family members came to his rescue and rushed him to the Chromepet govt hospital. Neighbours caught Sivaraman and handed him over to the police. Meanwhile, Krishnamoorthy succumbed to his injuries on Sunday.

The Selaiyur police altered the case against Sivaraman to that of murder and arrested him. He was produced before a magistrate and remanded in judicial custody.

Police investigations revealed that Sivaraman was working as a cab driver in Chennai.

Since he was drunk, he parked his vehicle by the side of the road and slept near the vehicle, police said.
