CHENNAI: At least

100 parents staged a demonstration

on the campus of

Srimathi Sundaravalli Memorial School

on Friday after the institution sent them a letter to demand that they pay a 'caution deposit' of 2 lakh each.

The

school

responded by saying it would either shut down or hand over administration to another agency at the earliest. The school, with campuses in

Chromepet

and Perungalathur, has nearly 4,000 students on its rolls.

On July 18, the school sent a letter to the parents (a copy of which is available with TOI ), stating that spiralling costs had made it extremely difficult to administer the institution.

After Friday's protest, officials of the school education department arrived on the two campuses and held talks with the parents and management.

"We have instructed the school to withdraw the letter demanding 2 lakh from the parents," Kancheepuram chief educational officer Angelo Irudayasamy told TOI. "We will soon seek a written explanation from the management."

He described the letter as "unwarranted".
