NCB thwarts bid to smuggle stimulant drug to Sri Lanka
CHENNAI: Sleuths of the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) have busted yet another gang operating from the periphery of Chennai to smuggle stimulant drug methamphetamine to Sri Lanka. They arrested a trio and seized Rs 70crore worth drug from them.
Based on a tip-off, NCB sleuths secured Bysul Rahman of Ramanathapuram on July 24 when he was about to board a bus to his hometown. A search in his bag led to the seizure of nearly six kg of methamphetamine.
During inquiries, the NCB discovered involvement of two more people in the smuggling and arrested them on Saturday. They were identified as Mansoor of Chennai and Ibrahim of Ramanathapuram.
Based on their confession, an abandoned house in Red Hills was searched and another one kg of methamphetamine was seized.
NCB's Chennai zonal director P Aravindhan said the trio had sourced the drug from Moreh in Manipur to smuggle it to Sri Lanka.
All three were remanded in judicial custody.
In June, the NCB seized 1.47 kg of methamphetamine and arrested a couple. Main accused Kasilingam was already in prison, and his wife was acting at his behest.
However, the latest arrest is a separate team and has nothing to do with the previous case, said NCB officials.
