COIMBATORE: A major rail accident was averted early on Wednesday when a boulder was placed on the track at Pungambady near Chennimalai in Erode district, but fortunately, a Kerala-bound goods train crushed the 30-inch boulder to pieces. According to the police and railway sources, miscreants had placed the bounder in a bid to derail passenger trains.
Railway officials rushed to the spot after the engine driver informed the station master at Perunthurai about the incident.
This is the seventh time the Tirupur-Erode belt has seen attempts to disrupt train services by the placing of boulders or big stones on the track.
Late on Tuesday night, boulders were placed on the track in the path of the Coimbatore-bound Inter-City Express from Chennai in two places close to Uthukuli and Vavipalayam in Erode district. The travellers said the bogies shook and there were loud noises from the track.
According to police sources, four persons claimed to be hailing from Bihar were under interrogation in connection with the incidents, which are suspected to be a sequel to three similar incidents reported in the last one week from Uthukuli and nearby Vijayamangalam.
