Madras high court restrains AIADMK general council from amending bylaws
CHENNAI: The Madras high court has restrained the AIADMK general council meeting from passing any resolution amending the bylaws of the party that would pave the way for a single leadership.
A division bench of Justice M Duraiswamy and Justice Sunder Mohan passed the order on an appeal moved by general council member Shanmugam and others. The judge passed the order around 4.20am on Thursday.
Around 8.45pm on Wednesday, a single judge of the court refused to restrain the general council (GC) meeting of the party, scheduled to be held in Chennai on Thursday, from amending the bylaws.
Aggrieved, the party coordinator O Panneerselvam faction approached Chief Justice Munishwar Nath Bhandari seeking permission to move an appeal. Around 11. 20pm, the CJ granted permission for the division bench headed by Justice Duraiswamy to hear the appeal.
The hearing began at 2.40am on Thursday, and the interim order restraining the party from taking any decision on single leadership was pronounced at 4.20am.
The bench permitted the GC to go on, discuss and take decision on the 23 draft agendas already shared with OPS but restrained it to pass any resolution amending the bylaws.
