IMD is yet to forecast if the cyclone will cross Tamil Nadu coast or will veer off northwards. Nevertheless, the approaching system may bring heavy rainfall in the city and neighbouring districts on Saturday and heavy to very heavy rain on Sunday and Monday with wind speeds touching 60-70kmph gusting to 80kmph along the coast and adjoining areas of Bay of Bengal.

IMD has issued yellow and orange alerts to the city, north coastal, adjoining interior and delta districts. As of Thursday, the weather system continued to be a well-marked low pressure over southeast Bay of Bengal and may intensify into a depression in 24 hours.

“Based on the current conditions, the system may reach north TN-south AP coast on December 4 as a cyclone.
Whether it will cross the coast, weaken or recurve is being continuously monitored,” said S Balachandran, deputy director general, IMD.

As of Thursday, both Nungambakkam and Meenam bakkam had exceeded their annual rainfall target.
