Doctor, tout held in Tamil Nadu's Namakkal for selling newborn

Tiruchengodu town police in Namakkal arrested a government hospital doctor and a broker on Sunday evening for selling newborns to childless couples across the state.

The police identified the doctor as A Anuradha, 49, from Tiruchengodu and broker T Logammbal, 38, of Sanarpalayam. Inspector M Mahendran said he received a complaint from S Dinesh, 29, of Suriyampalayam on Sunday. Dinesh's wife Nagajothi, 25, had delivered a girl on October 12. The couple had two daughters.

“The primary health centre doctors where Nagajothi delivered the newborn referred the child to the government hospital in Tiruchengodu town after the newborn’s health turned worse,” the inspector said. Dinesh stated in his complaint that a woman who introduced herself as a nurse told him on Saturday that she would give `2 lakh if he sells the baby. Dinesh informed about this to the district collector S Uma and SP S Rajesh Kannan.

The officials directed Dinesh to lodge a complaint with the Tiruchengodu town police. Tiruchengodu DSP Imayavaramban and inspector Mahendran initiated an inquiry with the woman identifed as Logammbal.

“Logammbal informed us that she had so far sold seven babies in the state including Tirunelveli, Trichy districts with the help of government hospital doctor Anuradha,” the inspector said, adding that these two people also arranged for kidney donation
