Chennai connectivity boost: Kilambakkam skywalk to bridge bus terminus and new rail station; works gather pace

A new skywalk was under construction to directly connect the Kilambakkam bus terminus with the upcoming Kilambakkam railway station, aiming to provide seamless movement for passengers switching between bus and train services without crossing traffic-heavy roads.

The skywalk was designed to offer a safe, elevated pedestrian corridor, reducing risks posed by fast-moving vehicles and congestion around the busy terminus area, especially during peak travel hours and festival seasons.

The project was expected to significantly benefit passengers using the new Kilambakkam bus terminus for long-distance and inter-district travel by providing quick and direct access to suburban and mainline rail services.

The Kilambakkam rail station and skywalk were being developed to support growing residential and commercial areas in south Chennai, where travel demand has risen sharply in recent years.

By diverting foot traffic away from surface roads, the skywalk was aimed at easing congestion near the bus terminus, helping smoother vehicular flow and reducing delays for buses entering and exiting the facility.

Construction of the Kilambakkam railway station was moving ahead alongside the skywalk project, ensuring both facilities become operational together and deliver integrated last-mile connectivity for thousands of daily commuters in south Chennai.

Authorities planned the skywalk and station infrastructure keeping heavy passenger volumes in mind, with adequate width and structural strength to handle daily crowds expected at one of Chennai’s major transport hubs.

The elevated walkway was expected to provide weather-protected movement for commuters, offering relief during heavy rains or extreme summer heat common in the region.

The project formed part of a larger push to integrate multiple transport modes—bus, suburban rail and future expansions—into a single, commuter-friendly network at Kilambakkam.

Officials viewed the skywalk-station combination as a step toward modern urban transit planning, prioritising walkability, safety and efficient transfers over vehicle-dependent access.
