TIRUNELVELI: The Tirunelveli city police have booked six people, including BJP’s Tamil Nadu unit vice-president Nainar Nagendran and

state vice-president VP Jayabalan, for their hate speeches at a protest meeting in Palayamkottai here on Wednesday evening.

The meeting was held to condemn poet and lyricist Vairamuthu’s alleged derogatory reference to Hindu deity Andal. Some speakers in the meeting threatened to harm those speaking ill of Hindu religion.

Based on a complaint lodged by sub-inspector of Palayamkottai police station Vimalan, the police registered a

case

against Nagendran, Jayabalan, BJP Tirunelveli district general secretary Suresh, Iyyavali Pothagar, Ayikudi Kumar Balagan and Krishna Priya on Thursday night.

According to the police, the complaint stated that at the meeting that was held at the Palayamkottai Jawahar Maidhan from 4.30 pm to 7 pm on Wednesday, the above mentioned persons spoke in a manner that would cause division among people. It added that their speeches and actions were provocative and posed a threat to national unity.
