Third EV Bus Depot in Chennai

Chennai has added a third depot for electric buses in its metropolitan area. This depot is located in Poonamallee and will hold a total of 125 new low-floor electric buses, including 45 that are air-conditioned, thus furthering the development of sustainable public transit within the city.

2/7

. Cost of Depot and Buses

The depot located at Poonamallee cost Rs 43.53 crore to construct while the fleet of 125 electric buses located there cost Rs 214.5 crore to purchase. The total investment of both projects is part of the ongoing effort to modernize urban transportation in Chennai.

3/7

Battery and Charging Facilities

The 300 kW electric buses can be fully charged in one and a half hours. The depot has 33 charging points and, although capable of charging buses from any route, will initially serve buses operating from Poonamallee.

4/7

Part of Wider EV Rollout Programme

The launch of the Poonamallee depot marks the third phase of Chennai’s electric bus rollout under the Sustainable Urban Services Programme, supported by international financial institutions to reduce pollution and strengthen public transport.

5/7

Safety Measures

CCTV cameras have been installed inside the buses to monitor activities and enhance passenger safety. These measures aim to make commuting more secure for all, particularly during crowded routes or peak travel hours.

6/7

Expansion Across the City

MTC plans to operate 625 low-floor electric buses through five depots — Vyasarpadi, Perumbakkam, Poonamallee, Central Workshop, and Tondiarpet. Work continues at the remaining depots, including charging facilities, maintenance bays, and safety infrastructure.

7/7

Accessibility Features

The buses have a low floor height of 40cm, which can be lowered to 25cm for easier boarding. This feature improves access for senior citizens, women, children, and persons with disabilities, ensuring a more inclusive public transport service.
