CHENNAI: Nearly 1,000 undergraduate medical seats in the AYUSH stream - Siddha, Ayurveda, Unani, and Homeopathy in Tamil Nadu are vacant, the directorate of Indian medicine in Tamil Nadu said here on Friday.
The state is planning a special "walk-in" counselling, besides additional schemes to lure students to these courses. Medical selection committee secretary Dr Malarvizhi said at least 369 government quota seats were vacant after two rounds of counselling based on NEET-2022 scores.
"Last year, we managed to fill most seats because there were many applicants. This year the number of applicants have dropped from around 6000 to less than 5,000," she said. Traditional medicine practitioners and self-financing colleges say NEET is already spelling doom for traditional medicine courses.
