Work on trauma centre stalled again

Chandigarh: Work on the GMCH Regional Trauma Centre, which was approved five years ago on 10 acres of land in Sector 53, is stalled as the revised scope of work provided by the GMCH director-principal has been rejected by the chief architect. A meeting will soon be held between the director-principal and the chief architect to resolve the issue.In a recent meeting held by UT health department officials, the director-principal said that the revised scope of work sent to the architect wing had been rejected by him. It was decided that a copy of the revised scope of work should be provided to the chief architect. “The architecture wing can provide requirement but cannot suggest norms,” said Dr Jasbinder Kaur, director-principal, GMCH.Land has been allotted for the project in Sector 53 for more than 15 years. A detailed project report was prepared in consultation with Prof M C Misra, former director, AIIMS, as an external expert. The DPR was sent to C K Misra, secretary, Government of India by then adviser to the administration, UT for approval so that requisite budget for establishment of the Regional Trauma Centre could be sanctioned.With no other such centre open in the region, it was proposed as a state of art facility where victims of natural and manmade disasters, road accidents and sudden medical needs could be taken care of. Facilities of helipad and air taxi landing were also proposed. The case was submitted to GoI last year.A dedicated trauma centre was inaugurated in PGI in 2011. However, it remains more than 200% occupied at any given point of time as patients come from adjoining states of Himachal Pradesh, Panjab and Haryana.
