BATHINDA: Sarbajit Singh, son of one of the assassins of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, has announced his decision to contest the upcoming parliamentary elections from Faridkot. Earlier too, he had contested parliamentary and assembly elections from different segments in Punjab.

Sarabjit's father, Beant Singh, along with fellow bodyguard Satwant Singh was involved in the assassination of Indira Gandhi on October 31, 1984. Beant was immediately killed by security guards while Satwant Singh was arrested and later sentenced to death. Sarabjit, who resides in Mohali, had contested the 2004 Lok Sabha elections from Bathinda and had got 1,13,490 votes. He also contested the 2007 Punjab assembly polls from Bhadaur assembly segment in Barnala district and had got 15,702 votes.

He also contested the 2014 parliamentary elections from the Fatehgarh Sahib seat on a BSP ticket and got 12,683 votes. Earlier, his mother Bimal Kaur Khalsa and grandfather Sucha Singh had contested on SAD (Mann) ticket in 1989 parliamentary polls and won from Ropar and Bathinda seats.

Persons close to Sarabjit Singh said he will raise delay in justice for cases of sacrilege and killing of two persons at Behbal Kalan in Faridkot. Sarbjit is pitted against actors and singers from Faridkot.
