The DC added that she received around 8-10 SMSes or applications daily from administrative officials, and the most common reason for seeking exemption was illness.

Sapra continued, "This is ridiculous. When according to the guidelines issued by the ECI, it is mandatory for government employees to attend election duty, still they keep coming to me for grant of exemption from duty. The most common excuse is falling sick but sometimes the excuses get funnier, like a woman seeking leave as she claimed that her delivery date was near.

When asked about the month, she said that she was in the sixth month. I just want to repeat that none of the employee will get leave unless there is a valid reason supported by documentary evidences."

She said after getting flooded with such applications and requests she was forced to issue a circular-cum-warning that no one must approach her for exemption from election duty. Sapra said that it was not possible for her to understand the fear behind performing an election duty.

She added, "We have been giving proper training to all polling staff and according to the ECI guidelines, full security cover will be provided to the poll staff to instil a sense of security among them. The

ECI guidelines

are very strict and their violation will force administrative action against those who fail to perform duties."
