Light rain, thunderstorm may cool simmering Tricity soon
Panchkula: The city is likely to get some relief from the blistering heat on May 28 and 29, when the weather department has forecast light rain and thunderstorm. Maximum temperature may dip to around 38 degrees Celsius by May 29.
The IMD has forecast mainly clear skies for Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula from May 25 to May 27, with maximum temperatures likely to remain around 42 degrees Celsius. Residents are expected to face severe heatwave-like conditions during this period.
However, some relief is likely towards May 28 and May 29 when partly cloudy skies, along with thunderstorm and light rain are expected across the Tricity region.
The weather department has also issued warnings for thunderstorm, dust storm, lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 40 to 50 kmph in Chandigarh in the days to come. Heatwave to severe heatwave conditions are likely to prevail at a few places till May 27.
Humidity levels in Chandigarh were recorded between 45% and 63%, making outdoor conditions uncomfortable, particularly in the afternoon. Seasonal rainfall departure in Chandigarh currently stands above normal at 102.3%.
According to the weather bulletin issued by India Meteorological Department (IMD), the city today recorded a maximum temperature of 40.9 degrees Celsius, which is 1 degree above normal, while minimum temperature settled at 24 degrees Celsius, one degree below normal.
Authorities have advised residents to avoid direct exposure to sunlight during peak afternoon hours, stay hydrated and take precautions against heat-related illnesses.
