Jobs still contractual, power union’s protest hits Kharar traffic hard
Mohali: Traffic on the Ludhiana-Chandigarh highway in Kharar was affected on Monday as contractual workers of the two power corporations of Punjab protested against the AAP government under the town’s main flyover near Daun village. A contract workers union of Punjab State Power Corporation and Punjab State Transmission Corporation staged the protest, accusing the AAP government of claiming to offer permanent jobs to power staff, but not actually doing it.Police were taken aback by the turnout. While they expected up to 250 people, the count surpassed 500 as the protesters brought along their families too. Police had to call in reinforcements. Led by the union’s state president Balhar Singh and state general secretary Rajesh Kumar Mor, the protesters earlier started their march near Kharar bus stand and were stopped near Daun village by police. The protesters then sat on the road. The protesters were to march towards the legislative assembly complex in Sector 1, Chandigarh, where a two-day special session began during the day.Later, a delegation of protesting workers submitted a memorandum to authorities and ended the protest. Earlier, police had to traffic going underneath the flyover to Kurali, Siswan and Landran. The flyover helped as protesters were underneath it, while highway traffic was moving on the flyover above.
