Punjab Congress MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira arrested in drugs case

JALANDHAR: Congress MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira was arrested by Punjab Police on Thursday morning after cops conducted raids at his Chandigarh house at around 6.30am.


The Bholath MLA was arrested in a case registered at Jalalabad, Fazlika.

Khaira alleged that he was arrested in a false case registered against him under NDPS Act at Jalalabad in 2015 in which the Supreme Court had already quashed the summons issued against him. “I am being hounded like this because I have been strongly opposing and exposing the Bhagwant Mann government and the chief minister is nursing personal vendetta against me,” he said.

The entire episode was streamed live from Khaira’s Facebook account which showed him arguing with cops and asking them to show arrest warrants.

Among Congressmen from the state, Khaira has been the most vocal critic of Bhagwant Mann government. Earlier two cases were registered against him in district Kapurthala, one for obstructing a public servant from discharging his duty and the other involving over 50 years old issues pertaining to his family’s ancestral land. In the latter case his 71-year-old sister was also booked. However, in all the cases Khaira got bail from courts.

After the formation of the INDIA bloc, there was a noticeable pause in the AAP government in Punjab actively pursuing or criticizing Congress leaders. However, in response to persistent and vigorous opposition from Punjab Congress leaders, CM Mann resumed his criticism of the Congress leaders on September 9. He specifically accused Punjab Congress president Raja Warring of accumulating wealth during his term as the Transport minister. It's worth noting that this marks the initial instance of a Congress leader being arrested since then.

Leader of opposition in the Punjab assembly Partap Singh Bajwa has condemned the way Khaira has been arrested.
