Chandigarh airport boosts aircraft safety with advanced docking system

Mohali: In a major technological upgrade aimed at strengthening pilot support, operational safety, and international service standards, Chandigarh International Airport has introduced the Smart Visual Docking Guidance System (S-VDGS) across most of its aircraft parking stands. The system, considered one of the most advanced in global aviation, provides real-time, software-assisted guidance to pilots as they dock their aircraft at the terminal.CHIAL CEO Ajay Kumar said the installation marks a significant leap in the airport's modernisation efforts. "Chandigarh Airport is equipped with the latest S-VDGS, which assists pilots in parking the aircraft with minimal effort. This highly sophisticated system uses visual guidance technology to ensure precise and safe docking. Of our 17 parking stands, 15 are now fitted with S-VDGS," he said.According to the CEO, the adoption of the system will enhance the airport's attractiveness to international carriers. "Such advanced facilities give pilots greater confidence while operating at the airport. It strengthens our eligibility to handle more foreign operators who prioritise precision, safety, and efficient ground operations," he added.Beyond the docking system, Kumar highlighted key infrastructure capabilities of Chandigarh Airport. The terminal is designed to handle up to 6 million passengers annually and is equipped with 5 aerobridges to facilitate seamless boarding and deboarding. For baggage handling, the airport features 3 conveyor belts, improving clearance efficiency during peak operational hours.The runway, measuring approximately 10,400 feet (around 3.16 km), is capable of handling wide-body and long-haul aircraft. This makes Chandigarh Airport operationally ready for future international expansions, including long-distance flights operated by foreign airlines.The CEO said that incorporating advanced technology and ensuring efficient ground movement are now priorities for the airport.
