CCTVs at Paralakhemundi to help cops control crime
Berhampur: Come January and Paralakhemundi, the district headquarters town in Gajapati district, will come under the surveillance of closed-circuit television cameras (CCTVs). Installation of as many as 25 CCTVs at 12 strategic locations are underway in the Odisha-Andhra Pradesh border town, a project aiming completion by the end of this month, sources said.
Paralakhemundi municipality will spend around Rs 30 lakh on the project, while the police will monitor its functioning. “Police have given a list of 24 locations for installation of CCTVs. Owing to funds crunch, the municipality council has decided to install at least 25 cameras in 12 locations as of now,” said L K Murmu, executive officer, Paralakhemundi.
“A control room would be set up in Paralakhemundi police station to monitor the CCTV cameras being installed at vantage points, including the market, court, bus-stand and palace areas, entry and exit roads of the town,” Murmu said. Police have allotted a room for installation of the equipment, including air conditioner, a big monitor and several other instruments, to monitor the movement of criminals,” he said.
“The CCTV cameras will help detect crimes following verification of footage,” said Prasant Bhupati, inspector-in-charge, Paralakhemundi. It will also detect the entry and exit of the criminals of the district and other neighbouring districts or state, as some of the cameras, installed at the entry and exit points, have automatic number plate reading facilities, said police.
Earlier, the residents of Paralakhemundi and police had urged the civic body for installation of CCTVs to help control the law and order situation and to track criminals.
