Echoes of a nightingale: MP plans award to keep Asha Bhosle’s legacy alive

Bhopal: In a tribute that resonates like a timeless melody, the Madhya Pradesh government is planning to institute a special award in honour of legendary singer Asha Bhosle, who passed away in Mumbai on Sunday at the age of 92.

State culture and tourism minister Dharmendra Singh Lodhi told TOI that discussions are scheduled with chief minister Mohan Yadav to finalise the proposal. The initiative aims to celebrate Bhosle's extraordinary contribution to Indian music and preserve her enduring legacy.


"We already present a national award in the name of Lata Mangeshkar. Instituting an award after Asha Bhosle would be a significant milestone and a fitting tribute to a legend," Lodhi said.

With a career spanning over eight decades, Bhosle recorded more than 12,000 songs across multiple languages, earning global recognition and a Guinness World Record. Her versatile voice brought life to a wide range of genres--from film songs to ghazals, bhajans, and pop--making her one of the most influential figures in Indian music history. She was honoured with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2000 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2008.

The proposed "Asha Bhosle Excellence Award" is expected to recognise both emerging and established artists, offering cash prizes, performance opportunities, and mentorship. The initiative also aligns with the state's broader push to promote cultural heritage and nurture musical talent.

Officials say the award could become a platform to inspire future generations, much like Bhosle's own journey from humble beginnings to legendary status.
