Burnt matchstick gives away cover-up: Man strangles wife, burns body to hide evidence in Madhya Pradesh
BHOPAL: A burnt matchstick recovered from the crime scene, coupled with forensic inconsistencies and CCTV footage as evidence, helped Sagar district police crack what they describe as a staged murder disguised as a car fire.
Investigators have confirmed that the woman, who was found charred to death inside a car, was strangled by her quack husband before being set aflame in a bid to destroy evidence and pass off the killing as an accident.
Police said the fire did not originate from any mechanical fault or CNG leak, as initially claimed by the suspect, but from the rear seat of the vehicle where the mortal remains of the victim, Seema Kurmi, had been placed.
The presence of petrol traces and the relatively limited damage to the car as compared to the extensive burning of the body raised immediate suspicion, police said, adding that the burnt matchstick found near the vehicle further strengthened the theory of deliberate arson.
The suspect, identified as Nilesh Kurmi, along with two accomplices—Ramkrishna Patel and Shubham Patel—was arrested. During interrogation, police said, Kurmi admitted to strangling his wife at their residence in Garhakota in the early hours of March 20, following a heated argument linked to his alleged extramarital affair. After ascertaining her death, he devised a plan to eliminate evidence.
He then called his tenants under the pretext that his wife had suffered a heart attack and needed to be rushed to hospital, the police said, adding that with their help, he placed her in the car and drove nearly 50 km towards a secluded stretch near Chanatoriya on the Sagar-Garhakota road. Around 4 am, he stopped the vehicle, poured petrol over her body lying on the rear seat, and set it ablaze before stepping away with his accomplices and watching the fire engulf the vehicle and his wife's mortal remains in it, the sleuths revealed.
Thereafter, the husband attempted to build a false narrative by calling his in-laws during the journey back home, claiming Seema's condition was critical. He later gave multiple contradictory versions—ranging from a heart attack to an accident and even a CNG explosion—but none withstood scrutiny, the police revealed.
CCTV footage from a toll plaza captured the car's movement during the intervening night, corroborating the timeline reconstructed by police. Forensic examination ruled out any explosion, and investigators noted that the CNG system in the vehicle showed no signs of blast damage.
Police said the two co-accused initially claimed ignorance, but later admitted to being present when the car was set on fire, adding that they deliberately did not alert emergency responders. They were booked for their role in destruction of evidence and criminal conspiracy.
Homing in on the husband's alleged extramarital relationship as the likely motive for the murder, the sleuths said the couple fought frequently and Seema had reportedly grown suspicious of her husband's activities, leading to escalating tensions in the household.
At the time of the murder, the couple's minor child was asleep in another room, the sleuths revealed, adding that the suspect told his daughter, who had woken up, that her mother was unwell and he was driving her to a hospital.
Police said the victim's post-mortem report, which is awaited, will conclusively establish if she died before being set ablaze. However, the investigators are confident that she died of strangulation which preceded the burning.
SP Vikas Shehwal said the arrests were made on the basis of strong forensic and circumstantial evidence, adding that further investigation was ongoing into all aspects of the case.
