The deceased have been identified as Haseena, 46, her children Afnan, 23, Ajnaz, 21, and Aaseem, 12. Haseena's mother-in-law Hajira, 70, is being treated at a hospital for stab injuries. Police, who have launched investigations into the multiple murders, suspected personal enmity could be the motive since no valuables were missing from the house in Tripti Nagar, Nejar.

Haseena's husband Mohammed Noor works abroad. An unidentified man is suspected to have entered the house and killed the four by stabbing them with a knife.

To a query whether there were more accused in the case, all that SP Dr Arun K said it was unlikely to be a case of murder for gain.

An auto driver told police that he had dropped a man from Santhekatte to Tripti Nagar, between 8.30am and 9am. He said the passenger was bald, wore a mask and was around 45 years old. "There were only five people in the house at the time of the attack, and neighbours reached the spot after hearing them crying," the SP said, adding five teams have been formed for probe.
