Relief For Bengaluru Commuters: City’s 1st Double-Decker Flyover Almost Ready

Double-Decker Flyover Nearing Full Operation

Bengaluru’s first double-decker flyover is expected to be fully operational by late December or early next year. BMRCL has begun launching steel girders over the Silk Board Junction to link HSR Layout with BTM Layout. Once complete, this elevated stretch will provide continuous movement across these busy city corridors.

Key Link for HSR, BTM and Ragi Gudda

The new down ramp will allow motorists from HSR Layout to reach BTM Layout and Ragi Gudda using the elevated road. This connection is expected to reduce travel time and divert traffic away from the highly congested ground-level junction, improving flow on the Outer Ring Road.

3/10

Earlier Partial Opening Helped Ease Traffic

The Ragigudda–Silk Board stretch was opened for one direction, allowing vehicles to bypass the chaotic intersection. However, the opposite side remained incomplete. The upcoming 5.5km full opening will benefit commuters travelling between BTM Layout, Ragigudda, HSR Layout and Electronics City.

4/10

Delays in Completing the Ramp

BMRCL initially planned to open the HSR-to-BTM ramp by September, but progress slowed due to heavy traffic, limited construction hours, plan alterations and technical challenges. These issues pushed the timeline, delaying the full operation of the double-decker flyover.

5/10

Shift from Concrete to Steel Girders

A technical issue involving the turning radius towards Electronics City required a design change. Instead of a prestressed concrete girder, engineers opted for a 42-metre steel girder to ensure safety and smoother alignment. This change is expected to support the completion target by December.

6/10

Traffic Signals to Stay at Silk Board

Even after full operation of the flyover, traffic signals below Silk Board Junction are unlikely to be removed. Several key turning movements will still pass through the junction, and signals are needed to regulate them. However, overall congestion is expected to reduce significantly once all ramps open.

7/10

mproved, But Not Signal-Free Movement

Vehicles from Bommanahalli, HSR Layout and Madiwala will continue to use the ground-level junction. Because of these intersecting movements, traffic signals remain necessary. The flyover will ease pressure, but the complexity of the junction means a signal-free system is not immediately possible.

8/10

Commuters Demand Safer Access to Silk Board Metro Station

With the launch of the Yellow Line, regular Metro users are urging authorities to improve pedestrian facilities near Silk Board station. Commuters say the lack of footpaths, muddy roads and clogged drains makes accessing the BMTC bus stop difficult and unsafe. Hundreds struggle daily due to poor walking infrastructure.

9/10

Footpath Gaps Affect First- and Last-Mile Travel

The absence of proper footpaths around the Outer Ring Road side of the station has created major difficulties for those switching between Metro and buses. Commuters highlight that despite better train connectivity, last-mile access remains unsafe, forcing many to cross busy roads without a secure or clean walking path.

10/10

Overall Travel Expected to Improve With Full Corridor Opening

Once the remaining ramp opens and the entire 5.5km double-decker stretch becomes operational, motorists are expected to experience smoother traffic flow. Although signals below the junction will remain, the elevated route will divert a large share of vehicles, helping ease congestion along Silk Board and improving east–west and north–south connectivity.
