BENGALURU: Could
Kannada
language be sustained and developed if it becomes a necessity for earning a
livelihood
?
While Kannada and culture minister
CT Ravi claimed such thinking is nothing but an illusion, littérateur
HS Venkatesh Murthy
, who was recently selected to preside over the 85th Kannada Sahitya Sammelana, felt such an idea cannot be dismissed.
Speaking at a programme organised by Kannada Development Authority (
KDA
) to distribute scholarships to youths studying Kannada in universities outside Karnataka, Ravi said any language, including Kannada, should sustain its identity independently.
According to the minister, if a language becomes a tool for earning livelihood, there wouldn’t be any need for skilled labour. “Even though English is considered a language which helps earn livelihood, there are a large number of unemployed people in England,” he added.
Murthy, however, opined that the argument that a language should become a tool for earning livelihood should not be misconstrued as an illusion.
Citing the decision of the new government in
Maharashtra to provide 80% jobs to local Marathas, he said the same should happen in Karnataka. He added that 80% jobs in IT-BT companies should be given to local Kannadigas.
Speaking on the occasion, KDA chairman and filmmaker T S Nagabharana said Kannada should be developed on the basis of self-respect.
