Bengaluru–Whitefield Rail Corridor Quadrupling Delayed

The completion deadline for the Cantonment–Whitefield rail corridor quadrupling has been extended to March 2027. The project aims to ease congestion on Bengaluru’s busiest suburban railway route serving IT and central business districts.

2/10

75% Construction Work Reported Complete

Rail authorities state that around 75% of the quadrupling work has been completed. However, the remaining 25% is still pending due to complex engineering requirements and ongoing infrastructure modifications across key urban sections.

3/10

19 km High-Density Rail Stretch Under Upgrade

The 19 km corridor connects Bengaluru Cantonment to Whitefield, passing through major stations. The upgrade is designed to improve capacity, reduce delays, and strengthen suburban connectivity between residential and IT hubs.

4/10

Revised Project Cost Now Rs 664.5 Crore

Initially sanctioned at Rs 492 crore in 2018, the project cost has escalated to Rs 664.5 crore. The increase reflects delays, infrastructure complexity, and rising construction and utility shifting expenses.

5/10

First Phase Between Cantonment and Byappanahalli Operational

The initial 5 km stretch from Cantonment to Byappanahalli West Cabin has already been commissioned. This segment marks partial completion and helps reduce congestion in a key section of the corridor.

6/10

Remaining Work Focused on Byappanahalli–Whitefield Stretch

The 14 km stretch between Byappanahalli and Whitefield remains under construction. Authorities aim to complete this section by March 2027, as it involves extensive yard remodelling and structural upgrades.

7/10

Infrastructure Challenges Slowing Progress

Work is delayed due to limited railway land availability, shifting of utilities, and movement restrictions in dense urban zones. Construction activities require careful coordination to avoid disruption to existing services.

8/10

Major Yard Remodelling at Key Stations

Significant yard remodelling is underway at Byappanahalli, KR Pura, and Whitefield. These upgrades are essential for handling additional rail lines and improving operational efficiency across the suburban network.

9/10

Station Redevelopment and Passenger Amenities Upgraded

Whitefield and KR Pura stations are being upgraded with new facilities such as parking, foot overbridges, shelters, and passenger amenities to improve commuter convenience and station capacity.

10/10

Capacity Boost Expected for Future Train Services

Once completed, the corridor is expected to support more suburban services, including additional MEMU trains. This will improve frequency, reduce travel time, and enhance connectivity across Bengaluru and surrounding regions.
