BMRCL’s innovative plan to tackle congestion

Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has proposed a 37km double-decker corridor to ease the city’s severe traffic woes. The unique design will feature surface roads, a flyover on the first level, and a Metro line above it. The plan aims to optimise existing space and ensure faster commute times. Commuters have shown overwhelming support for this project, seeing it as a futuristic urban solution. (Picture credit: Chethan Shivakumar)

Key corridors identified for the project

The 37km stretch will connect JP Nagar 4th Phase to Hebbal and Hosahalli to Kadabagere. These are among Bengaluru’s busiest routes, linking residential, commercial, and transit hubs. Once completed, the corridor will enhance north-south connectivity and significantly reduce travel time between major city points. (Picture credit: Chethan Shivakumar)

Massive investment planned for construction

BMRCL has estimated a total project cost of Rs 9,692 crore, which includes ₹3,023 crore for land acquisition. The road flyover component alone will cost about ₹261 crore per km. This heavy investment reflects the state’s push for large-scale mobility solutions that merge infrastructure with rapid transit efficiency. (Picture credit: Chethan Shivakumar)

Feasibility report and design details

Hyderabad-based Aarvee Engineering Consultants was assigned to prepare the feasibility and detailed project report. The structure will consist of four lanes — two each way — with multiple ramps for smooth entry and exit. Designed for speeds of up to 80 kmph, the project promises seamless flow for both vehicles and Metro commuters. (Picture credit: Chethan Shivakumar)

A step towards long-term decongestion

According to the study, this project could transform Bengaluru’s busiest corridors into efficient transport arteries. The model shows strong financial viability and high rates of return. BMRCL is finalising the design and tendering process, setting the stage for one of India’s most ambitious urban infrastructure ventures. (Picture credit: Chethan Shivakumar)

Learning from previous projects

BMRCL earlier experimented with a shorter double-decker stretch between Ragigudda and Silk Board. Though the toll system there was scrapped due to feasibility issues, the technical experience gained from that project has shaped the blueprint for this larger, more complex corridor. Traffic and pedestrian flow challenges

Studies revealed that the Hebbal junction alone sees over 5,600 pedestrians per hour, while vehicle density often crosses 10,000 passenger car units (PCUs) per hour. These figures far exceed the road’s designed capacity, making the double-decker flyover a crucial step in restoring traffic balance and safety. (Picture credit: Chethan Shivakumar)

Boost to airport connectivity

The proposed double-decker corridor is expected to provide a direct route to the airport, cutting down travel time drastically. The integration of Metro and road traffic on one structure is likely to become a model for future transport planning across other metropolitan regions. (Picture credit: Chethan Shivakumar)

Integration with Namma Metro’s Phase III

This double-decker project is part of the ₹15,611 crore Namma Metro Phase III expansion plan, covering 45km of new lines. The Centre approved the Orange Line in August 2024, but the state’s decision to add the double-decker feature delayed tenders. Now, Karnataka will bear the cost of the flyover segment.
