BENGALURU: RTE activists have condemned the education department's decision to hold board examination for classes 5 and 8 students.

In a statement released after taking part in a round-table on the issue last week, educationists Niranjanaradhya and Kumara Swami, president of Karnataka School and College Parents' Association BS Yogananda, and president of Registered Unaided Private Schools' Management Association, Karnataka, Lokesh Talikatte demanded continuous and comprehensive evaluation for both the classes, not an unscientific public exam. Niranjanaradhya said failure in a centralised exam could demotivate students and lead to dropouts.

Participants in the round-table asked the government to focus on nutrition and ensure eggs in meals for children up to class 10 instead of restricting it to class 8.

They asked the state government to continue with the Centre's post-matric scholarship and Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad fellowship for minorities.

On December 12, the department of public instruction issued guidelines for holding annual exams for classes 8 and 5 students.
