Bengaluru traffic mess: Nitin Gadkari promised to repair Hosur Road by April-end, says Biocon chief Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw

BENGALURU: Biocon chairperson and entrepreneur Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw Thursday said Union minister for road transport and highways Nitin Gadkari had assured her that Hosur Road in Hebbagodi would be restored to good condition by the end of this month.

Earlier this month, Shaw in a post on X had criticised the condition of Hosur Road (NH-44), calling it poorly designed and badly maintained. She also flagged the lack of response to repeated complaints. In reply, NHAI said the stretch, completed in 2010, now carried heavy traffic due to rapid urban growth. Following her post, Shaw met Gadkari last week.

"He (Gadkari) was very helpful. He said he was very upset that the national highway was in such bad shape and he promised to improve it," Shaw said on the sidelines of ‘STAMP: Nudging Commuter Behaviour' event here.

She also highlighted daily traffic congestion near the Biocon Hebbagodi Metro station.

Biocon staff shift to public transport
More than 1,000 employees of Biocon have shifted from private vehicles to public modes of commute as part of a corporate mobility programme aimed at reducing traffic congestion and vehicular emissions in Bengaluru.

The initiative — STAMP: Nudging Commuter Behaviour — has been developed by WRI India in collaboration with Toyota Mobility Foundation. A dedicated app enables employees to plan, track and pay for their journeys across metro, bus and feeder services. It integrates real-time information, ticketing, and multimodal connectivity, while also offering features tailored to Biocon's organisational needs.

"By aligning corporate policy with city infrastructure, we are tackling congestion at its source. I urge all corporate citizens to adopt this institutional approach and help us move Bengaluru toward a less congested, more livable future," said Maheshwar Rao, chief commissioner of Greater Bengaluru Authority.
