Bengaluru’s Yelahanka to get ₹6,000-crore elevated coaching terminal in 2 phases
Bengaluru: The city’s bursting railway network may soon witness one of its biggest infrastructure transformations yet, with the railways planning a ₹6,000-crore elevated mega coaching terminal at Yelahanka — envisioned as the country’s first.
A senior South Western Railway (SWR) official said the final location survey for the project has already been sanctioned and a study is underway. “Once the detailed project report (DPR) gets approval from railway board, construction work will start,” the official said.
According to railway officials, the first phase will include 16 platform lines — eight at ground level and eight on the first floor — along with four shunting lines, eight stabling lines, six pit lines for maintenance and two sick lines. “In phase two, 10 stabling lines, four shunting lines, eight pit lines and three sick lines will be developed,” the official added.
Railways officials said the project is being designed as a long-term solution to the city’s growing railway traffic burden.
On Saturday, minister of state for railways V Somanna reviewed various railway projects in Bengaluru and underlined the urgent need for additional infrastructure. He said nearly 300 train operations are handled daily across the city’s railway stations, with KSR Bengaluru alone managing around 150 trains every day.
Calling the Yelahanka terminal a “futuristic project,” Somanna said it will significantly strengthen the city’s railway network in the coming years.
