Bengaluru police inspector and 5 staffers suspended for bribery, misconduct
Bengaluru: City police commissioner B Dayananda suspended a police inspector and five staffers from Ramamurthynagar police station in east division on charges of misconduct, dereliction of duty and indulging in corruption. The suspended are police inspector Mutturaj, sub-inspector Umesh, assistant sub-inspectors Mahesh and Fairoz Khan, head constable Manjunath, and constable Basavaraj. A departmental enquiry has been ordered against the six officials.According to sources, the suspended inspector and others were responsible for not arresting a murder suspect, who last year led an armed gang and killed a history-sheeter. "The prime suspect was shown as accused number five in the FIR, but was never arrested. Above all, there were allegations that Mutturaj and others asked for Rs 27 lakhs to drop his name and Rs 5 lakh more to go easy with those arrested in the same murder case," a senior police officer said, adding: "Recently, Mutturaj monitored a drug peddling case, where the suspect was caught red-handed with ganja. There were allegations that Mutturaj let the suspect free after taking Rs 2 lakhs from him," he said. Also, an unsigned letter, purportedly written by staffers from Ramamurthynagar police station, did the rounds in Sept this year. In the 12-page letter, there were many allegations made against Mutturaj and five others. "As the letter went viral, senior police officials interacted with staffers from the station and discovered that all was not well in the station. A formal written complaint was taken from a few staffers and an officer of the rank of Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) was directed to probe into the allegations," a senior police officer said, adding, "During the probe, not only the allegations of helping the prime suspect in the murder and letting off the drug peddler after taking money were proved, but another incident, where a suspect who attacked police was let off after taking money, was also proved," he said.
