Anupriya breaks shot put record

Bengaluru: Kerala’s VS Anupriya stole the limelight on the opening day of the 18th National Youth Athletics Championships at the Mahatma Gandhi District Stadium in Ajjarkad, Udupi, on Friday.
The 16-year-old Anupriya broke the girls U-18 shot put meet record and was among the 19 athletes who met the qualifying standard for the Asian Youth Athletics Championships.
Anupriya opened with a throw of 15.36m, erasing the previous mark of 15.03m set by Kachnar Chaudhary in Kozhikode in 2016. She then bettered it with a best of 15.59m. Rajasthan’s Pooja Kumari (15.56m) and Punjab’s Gurleen Kaur (15.20) bagged the silver and bronze and also met the Asian qualifying standard of 14.92m.
In 3000m, Haryana’s Aman Kumar and Anju Bala topped the 3000m events among boys and girls. While Kumar clocked 8:35.86s, Anju timed 10:20.16s.
In the boys’ discus throw, Ritik of Haryana was a comfortable winner with an effort of 56.18 metres. Uttar Pradesh’s Abdul Rahaman (53.07) took the silver and Himachal’s Vaibhav the silver with a throw of 51.57m.

Manu Yadav (UP, 2.60); 3. Najiya Khan (Raj, 2.50). Long jump: 1. Mubassina Mohammed (Ldp, 5.83m); 2. Ramani Kumkum Bharat (5.49); 3. JA Sabreen Thavaomi (TN, 5.48). Shot put: 1. VS Anupriya (Ker, 15.59m NMR. Old: 15.03, Kachnar Chaudhary, Kozhikode, 2016); 2. Pooja Kumari (Raj, 15.56); 3. Gurleen Kaur (Pun, 15.20). Hammer throw: 1. Neha Yadav (UP, 55.80m); 2.
