BANGALORE: After a gap of almost two months, an ATM in the city was targeted by two assistants early on Tuesday. Two men who barged into the Corporation Bank ATM kiosk on Kammanahalli main road in East Bangalore, early on Tuesday, stabbed the security guard twice. However, when the guard started shouting for help, they fled, leaving the ATM machines untouched.
The guard
Murugan, 38, a native of Tamil Nadu, is undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Banaswadi. Though he suffered stab injuries on his neck and arm, he is out of danger and has given his statement to the cops.
Murugan told TOI he was in the ATM kiosk on night duty, when the two men barged into the ATM. It was between 1am and 1.30am. "They hadn't covered their faces and spoke in Hindi, but I couldn't understand what they were saying. I tried to stop them and chase them out, but one of them stabbed my neck," said Murugan.
His relative Arumugham, who guards the ATM in front of the Corporation Bank kiosk, came running on hearing the commotion. "I came after I heard Murugan crying for help. I spotted him covered in blood. He told me what had happened inside the kiosk and I immediately rang up the police control room," Arumugham said.
KR Puram ACP H Siddappa said police had recovered CCTV footage from the kiosk, which is being examined. "From the description given by the victim and the footage, the assailants appear to be in their mid-20s," the officer said.
He also said that though it was being investigated as a robbery attempt case, the personal rivalry angle is also being probed. "There were three machines in the kiosks and none of them were touched. The assailants weren't wearing masks. So we're investigating all angles," said Siddappa.
