Bareilly: A 50-year-old hardware trader died by suicide inside his shop in Bareilly's Nawabganj area minutes after receiving a call from cops allegedly threatening him and harassing him as the man from whom he had borrowed money demanded that he pay up immediately and complained to police.
Victim Buddhsen's elder son Dinesh Chand said his younger brother Akhilesh was briefly detained by police and used his mobile phone to allegedly threaten their father. "There was a monetary dispute with a man, Mukesh Kumar, who complained to the police, saying that my father wasn't repaying the amount. Police then detained my brother but released him after making the call. My father got so frightened that he took the extreme step," Chand told TOI.
Family members added that the policemen also used abusive language and threatened to send the son to jail unless the money was paid immediately.
Nawabganj circle officer Neelesh Mishra told TOI, "We have lodged an FIR against Mukesh Kumar for putting pressure on Buddhsen to repay the amount. Further investigation is underway." Mishra did not comment on Dinesh's allegations against the police.
