Woman gives birth to twins in three-wheeler, one infant dies
BAREILLY: A 33-year-old woman in Uttar Pradesh’s Sambhal district gave birth to twins in a three-wheeler after waiting for nearly four hours for a 102 ambulance to arrive. One of the babies was declared brought dead while the woman and the surviving twin are in the ICU of the district hospital.
According to police, the incident was reported from Hirapur village in Gunnaur block of the district. When the woman, Sarvesh, went into labour on Tuesday afternoon, her husband, Rambabu, 38, had called the 102 ambulance emergency service, an exclusive facility for the treatment and care of pregnant women and infants in the state. But after waiting for nearly four hours for the ambulance to arrive, Rambabu decided to take Sarvesh in a tempo.
“I contacted the 102 service and gave them our location. After waiting for nearly 30 minutes, I called them again and told them about Sarvesh’s condition. I kept on dialing the number for nearly two hours after that but all my efforts were in vain,” said Rambabu.
The nearest market from Hirapur village is in Babrala town, around 5km away, where one can get transport facilities. “I rushed to Babrala on foot and rented a tempo for Rs 500 to take my wife to the community health centre (
The woman along with the infants was taken to the CHC later, where one of the infants was declared brought dead. Chief medical officer (CMO) Dr Amrita Singh said, “An inquiry has been set up in the matter and in-charge of Gunnaur CHC, Dr Shishu Pal Singh, has been asked to submit a report within seven days. Strict action will be taken against those responsible. I was informed by CHC staff that one baby was stillborn.”
CMO Singh also said that out of a total 23 ambulances in the district, Gunnaur block has three vehicles.
