14 Gujjar Khan gang members convicted in 2019 teacher murder case
Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: More than five years after a schoolteacher was killed in broad daylight in Beed district, a special court on Thursday convicted 14 members of the Gujjar Khan gang on the charge of murder. The court, set up to deal with offences registered under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA), was presided over by special judge S R Patil.Special public prosecutor Ajay Tandale told TOI: "The sentencing will be announced in the coming week. The case highlights the persistent issue of organised crime and the need for stricter enforcement of law." According to the prosecution, the prime accused, Anwar Khan, and his accomplices first attacked Sayyed Sajedali Ansarali Mir in 2013 after he refused to pay extortion money. Mir had filed a police complaint against the accused, but they continued to threaten him and his family with dire consequences.Between 2.30pm and 3pm on Sept 19, 2019, the teacher was at a tea stall near Sana Function Hall. The assailants, armed with knives, swords, and wooden sticks, arrived in a white jeep and two motorcycles. They brutally assaulted him, inflicting deep wounds on his chest, neck, ribs and hands. After the accused fled the scene, a severely injured Mir was rushed to the govt hospital where doctors declared him dead upon arrival, the prosecution said. The case, registered under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), the Arms Act, the Maharashtra Police Act, and the MCOCA, saw a total of 44 witnesses presented by the prosecution. The court relied on eyewitness testimonies, forensic evidence, and circumstantial reports to establish the guilt of the accused. The court praised the investigation led by police inspector Shivalal Purbhe of Shivajinagar police station, who filed a chargesheet making a strong case against the accused. The convicts, including Anwar Khan, Mujib Khan, Syed Nasir, Syed Shahrukh and others, have been found guilty under section 302 (murder), 120-B (criminal conspiracy), 147 (rioting) and 148 (rioting with deadly weapons) of the IPC and provisions of the MCOCA. Two others have also been found guilty under section 212 (harbouring offenders) of the IPC, while Anwar Khan faces additional charges under the Arms Act.
