PATHANKOT: Pathankot police foiled a major attempt to push a huge consignment of drugs from Madhya Pradesh (MP) following the seizure of 155 kg of poppy husk on Sunday.

Senior superintendent of police (SSP), Pathankot, Harkamalpreet Singh Khakh informed that police had seized 155 kg poppy husk which was concealed in a custom-made compartment in the side of a truck.

He said police had arrested two drug peddlers identified as Binder Kumar, resident of Nanda Chour, Bullowal, Hoshiarpur, and Sukhwinder Singh, resident of Sultanpur Lodhi, Kapurthala.

“We have been keeping a close vigil on the activities of narcotics smugglers and have constituted special checking teams,” said Khakh adding that a special team set had set up high-tech naka at Malakpur Kiri road.

SSP said that during checking at the police checkpoint, the police team comprising of station house officer (SHO) Taragarh intercepted a truck and found 46 polythene bags and recovered 155 kg of poppy husk concealed in the hidden custom-made side compartment in the truck.

He said a case was registered against both the alleged accused under NDPS Act at police station Taragarh, Pathankot.

The preliminary investigation revealed that the alleged accused had brought the poppy husk from MP which fetch a lucrative price in the market.

“It has also come to the fore that accused Binder Kumar is a habitual criminal and one criminal case pertaining to NDPS Act case already registered against him,” said the SSP.

Khakh claimed that this was the fifth big haul by Pathankot police in recent times. Earlier police had recovered three quintals and 122 kg and 45 kg poppy husk from Jammu and Kashmir bound trucks and was successful in breaking the entire supply chain.

He expressed hope to get more clues of poppy smuggling after both the alleged accused were produced in the local court and taken on remand for further interrogation.
