BATHINDA: Farm organization BKU Ekta Ugrahan on Monday evening said it would intensify its protest over what it described as the police’s attempts to favour two commission agent brothers who were booked for abetting the

suicide

of a farmer who they allegedly owed money.


Earlier, the farm organization’s district committee protested outside Bathinda Cantonment police station for four days and lifted it late in the evening. The farm organization ended the stir after a meeting with Bathinda SSP, in which no decision could be taken. The farmers were demanding the arrest of the brothers and the police to make them return Rs 20 lakh, which they alleged to family of deceased Manjit Singh of Bhucho village.

Police had sought time till Monday evening from farmers. Commission agent brothers Surjit Kumar and Ashok Kumar were booked on June 14, nearly five months after Manjit took poison at his home on January 27 and died on February 9.

At the time, the family had agreed to regular legal formalities which take place in case of an unnatural death. But, on June 8, family approached the police and claimed that the brothers refused to return Rs 20 lakh to Manjit and he committed suicide due to this.
