PRAYAGRAJ: In a major development, a joint team of West Bengal Police and Handia (Prayagraj) police on Sunday arrested former Trinamool Congress MLA Khokan Das near the Handia toll plaza on the Kanpur–Varanasi highway.
DCP (Ganga Nagar) Kuldeep Singh confirmed the arrest of the former TMC MLA near the Handia toll plaza while he was travelling from Meerut. He said, "A team of West Bengal Police sought assistance from its Handia (Prayagraj) counterpart, following which the joint team was carrying out vehicle checks on the highway."
Das, who represented the Bardhaman South constituency, was taken into custody in connection with charges of threats, extortion and abetment of political violence. The police will take him to West Bengal after obtaining transit remand from the concerned court.
Police sources said a team of West Bengal Police had been tracking the former MLA and received inputs about his movement on NH-2. The former TMC leader was detained following information regarding the pending case against him. He was being produced before a local court for transit remand to facilitate his transfer to West Bengal for further interrogation and legal proceedings.
